Endodontics (Root Canal)

Typically a root canal (endodontics) procedure is removal of
the tooth's pulp due to an infection. The infection is usually
caused by deep tooth decay or a severe crack in the tooth that
requires that the pulp be removed to prevent further damage.

Untreated the infection can lead to pain or swelling or an abscess
at the root of the tooth leading to its removal.

Steps in a typical procedure:

▪ Administration of a local anesthetic and an opening is made
into the crown of the tooth.

▪ The pulp is carefully removed and the chamber is shaped to a
form to fit the filling material

▪ Typically the opening is covered with a temporary filling while
the crown for the tooth is manufactured to prevent saliva from
getting into the chamber.

▪ In the next stage the temporary filling is removed and the tooth
is filled with a bio compatible material then sealed.

▪ A crown is fitted to replace the portion of the tooth that was
removed and restore the tooth to its normal shape and size.

The sequence that foods are eaten can determine
the risk for cavities. If you eat sugary foods after
meals, you decrease the chance for cavities, as
opposed to eating sugary foods alone
