Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease refers to infections that occur in the gum and
bone surrounding the teeth. Untreated this disease may lead to
tooth loss.

Signs of Periodontal Disease:

▪ Gums that bleed easily
▪ Red, swollen or tender gums
▪ Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
▪ Persistent bad breath
▪ Pus between the gums and teeth
▪ Loose or separating teeth
▪ A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.
▪ A change in the fit of partial dentures

Treatment will vary based on the type and severity of the disease. In
its early stages the disease may be treated by simply changing your
daily oral hygiene.

In the later stages treatments may include special cleaning of the
tartar and plaque at the gum line to help promote the healing of the
gum tissues. Your dentist may also prescribe medication or rinses to
help healing. In the most severe cases you may be referred to a
specialist to repair or replace bone structure that can be damaged
by the disease.

Left untreated Periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and have
more serious affects on your overall health. Good oral hygiene
along with regular visits to your dentist are your primary lines of
defense against this problem

Increased Risk factors for Periodontal Disease

Tobacco use. People who smoke or chew tobacco have higher risk of periodontal disease. Tobacco
use increases the likelihood of plaque and tartar
forming on the teeth.

Systemic diseases such as diabetes, blood cell
disorders, HIV or Aids

Many medications such as steroids, some types
of cancer drugs or blood pressure drugs can
affect the gums.

Genetics. Some people may be prone to more
agressive forms of periodontal disease based
on family history.

74% of Americans are affected by some type of
periodontal  or gum disease or gingivitis. (AGD 2002)
